This Hellenistic Greek reader is designed for students who have completed one or more years of Greek and wish to improve their reading ability and gain a better appreciation for the diversity of Hellenistic Greek. This goal can only be accomplished by working through a selection of Greek texts that reflect different styles, genres, provenances, and purposes. The seventy passages in this reader have been arranged into eight parts on the basis of their level of difficulty. Each passage is accompanied by grammatical support and vocabulary lists, as well as other aids to translation, including a cumulative glossary. The grammatical information is contained in the footnotes. The vocabulary lists are conveniently arranged below the Greek texts to which they refer. • Includes canonical and non-canonical Christian texts, Septuagint (prose and poetry), Jewish Pseudepigrapha, inscriptions, and Jewish and Hellenistic literary Greek. • Includes a Web component with more than thirty additional readings for classroom and independent use. • Passages offer a glimpse into the everyday life of Hellenistic Greeks, with themes such as sexuality, slavery, magic, apocalypticism, and Hellenistic philosophy.

Every odd year the International Society for the Study of Biblical and Semitic Rhetoric organizes a conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). It's a great opportunity for scholars specialized in this specific field of exegesis to expound the results of their research and compare them with others. Also students participate, especially PhD students, in particular of the Department of biblical theology of our Faculty of theology. The largest part of the conference is devoted to analysis of texts, especially of the Bible - Old and New Testament -, but also of other Semitic texts such as the Koran, even other texts widely influenced by biblical texts, such as the Rule of St. Benedict. There are also methodological reflections, to deepen some aspect of our exegetical methodology.

This new volume in the series Berliner Turfantexte contains the edition, with translation and detailed commentary, of a series of important Christian texts in Sogdian, most of them previously unpublished. The emphasis is on Biblical texts translated into Sogdian from the Syriac Peshitta version: a Psalter in Sogdian script, fragments of Gospel lectionaries, and a double-folio from a lectionary of the Pauline Epistles. Other texts edited in the volume include a retelling of the story of Daniel, a text on the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, and the "Wisdom of Ahiqar", all of them in recensions which differ significantly from any known Syriac version. Two analytical glossaries, one for the Psalter and other texts in Sogdian script and one for the texts in Syriac script, cover not only the works edited in this book but also a number of Christian Sogdian texts published by the author in scattered articles over the last twenty years or so. The volume concludes with a bibliography, an index of words discussed in the commentary, and seventeen plates. This work will be of interest to specialists in Iranian languages, mediaeval Central Asia, Biblical studies, Syriac literature, and the history of the "Church of the East".
